August 2026 Jam Session: Building a Classroom Community That Lasts

Welcome to Edutopia’s first-ever Jam Fest–two Jam Sessions, double the great conversation! You can check out the companion session on class routines here.  🎶For this Jam Session, we’ll focus on building a classroom community where everyone belongs.

Before students can take academic risks, they need to feel known and safe. The relationships you build with kids in the first weeks aren’t a warm-up to the “real” learning; they’re the foundation everything else stands on. Join our panelists for a conversation on strategies that make classrooms feel like a community and ensure that students feel like they belong from day one.

We’ll discuss questions like:

→How do you get to know each student as a person in the first weeks, beyond icebreakers, in ways that actually shape how you teach and support them all year?

→ How do you lay the groundwork now so the classroom community can overcome real challenges later–conflict, a hard day, a student who’s struggling?

→ What does a genuine sense of belonging look like day to day, and how do you sustain a sense of community after back-to-school season wears off?
