Erin Piedmont

Erin Piedmont is an Assistant Professor of Elementary Social Studies at Georgia Southern University. She earned her B.S. in Elementary & Special Education and M.A. in Literacy Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. She earned her Ph.D. in Social Studies Education at Purdue University. Before pursuing her doctorate degree, Erin taught as a special education resource and general education teacher at a culturally and linguistically diverse elementary school.

Erin’s teaching and research interests stem from her commitment to preparing pre-service and in-service teachers for anti-oppressive social studies pedagogy. Her work currently explores how pedagogical approaches in social studies methods courses foster the sociopolitical and critical consciousness of teacher candidates, with particular focuses on critical historical inquiry, project-based learning, and place-based learning. Erin holds leadership roles in the field of social studies education by serving on the CUFA Motherscholars Committee and as the Communications Chair for the American Education Research Association’s Social Studies Research SIG.
